ABOUT THE YMCA OF CECIL COUNTY Since 1951 the YMCA has been providing the community with
programs and recreation. What started out as a small
organization operating out of a second floor room in the Town
of Elkton's Community Building, has become the center of
activity for many families from all over the county. |

According to a Cecil Whig article, dated August 14, 1952, the Y's initial
programs drew more people than the entire
population of the Town of Elkton (5,376). In addition to Little League, adult softball,
badminton, rifle lessons and chess, they offered swim instruction from nearby
residential pools. |

|
The "Y" finally found a home in 1970 when they moved into a building just off
Route 40, West Pulaski Highway. A new four-lane Olympic size indoor swimming
pool was installed, new programs added and membership increased. Although the
building was a step up from their original headquarters they quickly outgrew it. |

So, after many years of planning and with the help of much fundraising and 36
donated acres, the group moved into a 33,000 square foot "state-of-the-art"
facility, located at Routes 40 and 279. Four years later, a 41,000 square foot
wing was added, making the indoor facility 74,000 square feet.
This building now houses a 3,500 sq. foot fitness room, 25-yard swimming
pool, five day-care rooms, three full-sized gymnasiums, two racquetball courts,
an aerobics room, a karate room, a gymnastics room, two conference rooms and two
mulit-purpose rooms plus eight acres utilized for football and other outdoor
sports.
Plans are currently in the works for additional expansion and programs are
steadily being added to their already busy schedule. The "mission" of the Y
has remained the same throughout the years, however. Their motto "We build
strong kids, strong families, strong communities" pretty much
says it all!
We greatly appreciate your interest in our organization and our programs.
Thank you for visiting today! |
